5 TIPS TO CREATE A COMFY LIVING ROOM FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
As you step through your front door, you kick off your shoes and head straight to the living room to relax on the couch.
Your living room is a space where the entire family gathers to share special moments, whether it’s laughing around the coffee table playing board games or enjoying a nightcap with your loved one. If your living room is need of some dire help then take it up a notch and transform the functional area into an inviting space. There is no need to wait until the kids are grown up or until you move into a larger home; it’s a space you’ll be spending most of your time in so it’s best to get started now. After a long day in the office or running errands, it’s an ideal place to unwind and relax.
Follow our tips to create a comfy retreat everyone can enjoy:
- Start with the basics
Choosing your furniture is the most important element of your living room, as once you’ve chosen the perfect couch or coffee table the rest of the space will need to complement the style you’ve chosen.
Go all out on comfort, choose couches and chairs that are not too hard or too soft, but just right! Take your loved one with you to an @home store and have fun trying them out first hand, or if you’re looking for convenience just shop online.
Make sure the furniture you choose is made with high-quality materials, so that it’s soft to the touch and durable. If you have a small living room, then opt for an Oxford full corner couch to add a contemporary element to your space and allow for plenty of seating. If you have a larger space to work with then we suggest you go for two Chester three seater leather couches paired with two Henning lounge chairs.
Next on your list is a coffee table. If you’re looking for an organic feel in your home then a tree pad coffee table will complete the look; where as if you’re after a modern look then a copper and marble coffee table will do the trick.
- Layered lighting
Lighting is often overlooked when it comes to home décor, however if done right it can easily create a cosy setting. If your living room is somewhere you often entertain guests you’ll want it to be well lit but still welcoming and intimate.
You’ll need to layer different types of lighting throughout your room, start off with a hanging light that will complement the look of the space. Choose stylish floor lamps to light up the darker corners and table lamps to light up the spaces where you’ll be seated. As a finishing touch, light a few candles to add extra glow.
- Divided spaces
Your living room is a gathering space, so ensure the way you arrange the furniture encourages interaction and conversation. Make sure the couches and chairs are pulled away from the walls and faced towards each other.
If you live in an open plan home, then a console table or side board will be an essential piece of furniture for your living room. Whether you push it up against the wall or couch, it will allow you to create the space you want.
If you have a large living room, use ottomans to break up the space by placing them into the centre of the seating circle.
- Add textiles
If you’re after a warm and cosy space for your family to hang out in then you’ll need to incorporate various textiles. Have fun picking out scatter cushions to add a soft touch and complement the furniture.
In winter, a few throws here and there will add a pop of colour and some extra warmth, plus they are bound to make guests feel right at home. Who doesn’t love a cup of tea in hand and blanket to curl up with on chilly evenings?
- Décor divine
This is where you can really let your personal taste shine, pick your favourite décor pieces and scatter them around your coffee table and side boards. Don’t be afraid to take a risk, you can easily change your décor seasonally, plus it’s a cost-effective way to update the look of your home.
