When winter arrives, Hygge is all the hype. Taking a page out the Danish Hygge book we have selected the 6 essentials for creating a cosy winter home, SA style.
STEP 1: GET COMFY
Throw on your loungewear and slip into a pair of cosy winter socks, grab your favourite blanket and chill. Winter is all about being as comfy as possible. It’s all about chunky knit or decadent faux fur throws, soft velvet cushions in warm colours and spending the day just snuggling on the sofa. Create your own cosy nook that you can escape to complete with blanket, snacks and that book you just cannot put down.
STEP 2: SLOW DOWN, SWITCH OFF
Live your life, every moment. Be present. Hide your phone and devices and take some time to just switch off and reconnect with yourself, your family, your friends and your surroundings.
Stay in your pyjamas all day just because. Retreat to your favourite spot in the house and give yourself some time alone, without the kids or other distractions. Indulge in your favourite coffee, or hot chocolate – why not? Treat yourself to a pamper session, think massage candles, body butter and your favourite winter fragrance.
Choose one night a week for family, light a fire and talk to each other – social media not allowed.
STEP 3: TURN YOUR HOME INTO A HAVEN
Appreciate the space that you share together and create a home that is your haven. Create a warm and inviting environment with simple things like candles, cushions and fresh cooking. Each room in the house should be a sanctuary you can sink into. Invest in beautiful Egyptian cotton or winter bed linen, duck down duvet inners and the right pillows for a sleep sanctuary you look forward to returning to each night. Add texture to your haven with velvets, warm winter colours and considered furniture detailing.
STEP 4: BE TOGETHER
Be there for your loved ones. Winter is about hibernating at home. The smallest things can be turned into quality time together. Make watching TV together more fun and cosy with large bowls of popcorn or even indulgently big bowls of pasta enjoyed with your family’s new favourite series. Stay in on Sundays and curl up on the couch, just being together as a family. Arrange more coffee or tea dates at yours, spending the hours chit chatting about nothing in particular while you offer that second cup of epic hot chocolate, it’s winter after all. Invite everyone back to yours after a dinner or night out and sip warm winter cocktails or a nightcap by the fire. Be brave, let your guard down, just be.
STEP 5: WARM FOOD AND DRINKS
Take pleasure in eating and drinking. Spoil yourself with delicious treats. They don’t always need to be unhealthy or sweet. Prep hearty wholesome meals to share, like soups, curries or a wonderfully slow cooked stew. Arrange games evenings and lay out a feast of soul soothing comfort foods. Red wine is a must. Winter is all about gathering.
STEP 6: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPIEST
Celebrate the things you love the most. Take the time get sentimental. Create a picture wall of all your fondest memories. Love the little things. Like eating pizza in your pyjamas for breakfast, watching cartoons. Choose fragrance diffusers in your favourite winter scent, change to warm, soft lighting and enjoy the feeling of cosy togetherness. Take a deep breathe and remember these moments, when you feel your most complete.
