Inspired by the heritage of Africa’s wildlife, Mastertons, one of South Africa’s oldest coffee roasters, created a special All African Arabica blend to help in the conservation of the rhino.
A cuppa for the love of rhinos
Founded in 2010, the Chipembere Rhino Foundation and its devoted team of conservation specialists are committed to the protection and conservation of Africa’s rhino.
Mastertons coffee and tea specialists from the Eastern Cape have been perfecting their craft for nine decades, earning them the reputation of master roasters and blenders of top quality Arabica coffee.
It has been a true collaboration right from the beginning. The Chipembere custom blend was perfected with the help of the Chipembere Rhino Foundation team who tasted and tested a variety of hand-crafted coffee blends. Roasted for a cause, for every 250 grams of ‘Chipembere’ coffee purchased by retailers and coffee-loving rhino supporters, R5 is donated to the Chipembere Rhino Foundation to aid their rhino conservation efforts.
The unwavering support and assistance from donors such as Mastertons Coffee and Tea Specialists contribute significantly to the safety and security of our rhinos and empower the Anti-Poaching Units dedicated to protecting this iconic species. The commitment of everyone involved has led to the Foundation providing tangible equipment, intelligence, technology, education and relocation assistance to rhino custodians who share the Foundation’s conservation ethic.
Meet Sammy, helping track poachers
Sammy is an 18-month old German Shepherd recently relocated to the Eastern Cape from Pretoria to help combat rhino poaching. Sammy was trained by K9 Detection and Protection Services for the Chipembere Rhino Foundation. Sammy’s training costs were funded by the Foundation with the help of sales of Chipembere Rhino coffee.
After six months of acclimatisation on her resident reserve, Sammy will be available to assist Eastern Cape rhino reserves in case of a security breach that requires a K9 team to track and apprehend suspected poachers or trespassers, as well as on poaching crime scenes, should a SAPS K9 unit not be available.
Another dog, Dixie, is currently also in training as a human tracker dog only.
Chipembere Rhino coffee is now available in @home stores and online.
