There are many spices we use in our day to day cooking. A sprinkle of cinnamon in you’re morning coffee. A dash of Turmeric to get that rich yellow coloured curry. Spices play a significant role in the way we cook and can amplify just about any food. Every spice has its own unique flavor, essence and health benefit.

Here are the health benefits of some of our favorite spices:

Cardamom is most commonly used in pumpkin spice mixes. It is known to soothe an upset stomach, and help fight inflammation.

Cayenne pepper is a type of chili pepper used to prepare spicy dishes. Capsaicin (which is a compound found in Cayenne pepper) is known to reduce the appetite and increase fat burning.

Cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels and has a very positive anti-diabetic effect. It also has the ability to slow the breakdown of carbs in the digestive tract and improve insulin sensitivity.

Cumin is known as a key ingredient in many Indian dishes. It is naturally rich in iron, and plays a small role in weight loss.

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow colour. Curcumin (which is a compound found in Turmeric) is a strong anti-inflammatory and is also known to improve brain function, reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, and relieve arthritis.

No matter how it’s made, there is no wrong way when it comes to adding spices to your meal. The right spice blend is whatever tastes the best to you!
