In the southern hemisphere, our traditional Christmas includes ice-filled drinks, outdoor activities and copious amounts of sunshine. So, to make the most of the excellent weather, why not decorate your home in a way that reflects both summer and the festive season?
Deck the Halls
You may find yourself at a loss when deciding on your summertime Christmas decorations, but we’ve put together some surprising decorating ideas that are sure to get your guests talking:
- Appropriate adornments – Instead of the usual plush tree hangings, consider making use of alternative ornaments, such as glass and wooden decorations. They add Christmas cheer to a room without the use of plush wintery accessories such as blankets and throws.
- Christmas cocktails – Since hot drinks are out of the question, why not have some fun with making your own drinks? Utilise both citrus and seasonal fruits to mix a refreshing punch that both quenches your thirst and tickle your tastebuds.
- Festive flora – Do away with the normal fir trees or sprigs of holly and consider indigenous vegetation. Decorate your table with a centrepiece comprising regional flowers in all the colours of Christmas, or sprigs of Rosemary or Mint from your garden for fragrance.
- Outdoor opulence – Since most South Africans enjoy each others company outdoors for most of the year, why should Christmas be an exception? Consider decorating your lawn area with twinkle lights and ornaments for a Yuletide braai for the books.
