Dry January, as in ditching alcohol in the first month of the new year, is an annual tradition for many people. For some, it’s part of a New Year’s resolution to drink less, while others claim it’s a way to “detox” from excessive drinking over the holidays.

So, if you’re one of the many people who’ll be starting off 2021 with a resolution to drink less, these mocktail recipes will help make your Dry January a more happy one.

Gin-Free G&T

Ingredients

  • 5 cardamom pods
  • ½ cucumber
  • 1 chamomile teabag
  • ½ bunch mint leaves , plus extra to garnish
  • 1 strip lemon zest
  • 5 cloves
  • ½ bunch rosemary
  • Tonic water , to top up
  • Ice
  • Few pomegranate seeds , to garnish (optional)

Method

  • Bruise the cardamom pods and slice the cucumber. Put them both in a large jug and add the chamomile teabag, mint leaves, lemon zest, cloves and rosemary. Top up with 500ml cold water. Leave to infuse in the fridge for 2-4 hrs. To serve, strain the infused water and pour 50ml of it into each glass. Top up with tonic water and lots of ice. Garnish each one with a few more mint leaves and pomegranate seeds, if you like.

Virgin Frozen Margaritas

Ingredients

  • Lime wedge
  • Coarse sugar
  • 1 can frozen limeade concentrate
  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened grapefruit juice
  • 4 cups ice cubes

Method

  • Place the sugar on a shallow plate. Rub the edge of 4 glasses with the lime wedge, then dip the rims in the coarse sugar.
  • Combine the frozen limeade concentrate, orange juice, grapefruit juice and ice cubes in a blender and blend until slushy.
  • Pour into the glasses to serve.

Virgin Pomegrante and Cranberry Bellinis

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups pomegrante juice, chilled
  • 1 cup unsweetened cranberry juice, chilled
  • 1 bottle sparkling water, chilled
  • 2 limes, thinly sliced
  • 1 bunch fresh mint, for garnish

Method

  • In a saucepan, combine water and sugar over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved. Take the pan off the heat and allow the syrup to cool.
  • In a 6 to 8 cup capacity pitcher, combine the cooled water/sugar mixture, POM juice, cranberry juice and sparkling water.
  • To each glass, add a slice of lime and a sprig of mint. Pour the bellini mixture into the prepared glasses and serve.

Ginger Mojito Mocktail

Ingredients

  • 8 fresh mint leaves
  • 60ml fresh lime juice
  • Ice cubes
  • 4 teaspoons Zulka Morena Pure Cane Sugar
  • 240 ml ginger ale
  • 90ml club soda

Method

  • In a tall glass, muddle together the mint leaves and lime juice.
  • Add the Zulka sugar and fill the glass with ice cubes.
  • Add the ginger ale and club soda, and stir well.
  • Garnish the mocktail with a lime wedge before serving (optional).

Pineapple & Lime Mocktail

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp clear honey
  • Edible gold glitter
  • Small bunch coriander leaves
  • Juice 1 lime
  • 750ml pineapple juice
  • A handful of ice
  • 400ml tonic water

Method

  • Dip a pastry brush in the honey and paint a line down one side of 4 tumblers. Sprinkle some edible gold glitter over the honey, dust off any excess, then put the glasses in the fridge.
  • Chop the coriander leaves and place in a cocktail shaker with the lime juice, 100ml pineapple juice and a handful of ice. Shake together until the outside of the shaker feels cold. Strain into the glasses, add extra ice cubes and divide 650ml pineapple juice and the tonic water between the glasses.
