ELEVATE THE EVERYDAY
Finding the right balance between functionality, cosiness and style can sometimes seem impossible to achieve when decorating our homes. Here are a few simple styling tips for when you are decorating your home.
A great way to add pattern and texture to your home is with curtains, cushions, throws and rugs, these items can work together or independently to help you create the mood and style you want in your home.
Curtains – The aim is to create the illusion of higher ceilings with simple floor-ceiling drapes. This can be achieved by hanging your curtains higher and wider giving the illusion of a much larger space. Curtains should start all the way at the ceiling and just kiss the floor.
Scatter Cushions – There are so many fun cushion options to choose from, and cushions are such an easy way to spice up your space- especially during the seasons. You can mix and match your colours, textures, along with shapes and sizes. Don’t be afraid to be bold!
Throws & Blankets – Have the power to make everything look cozier and lived-in. They also provide an effortless way to add texture or color/pattern to your room. If you like to only have one throw, make sure it’s thrown a little loosely for a relaxed feel but if you want two or more, play with the placement until the space looks balanced.
Carpets & Rugs – The layered look is the perfect way to feature a rug that might not be big enough for the space. Some spaces, especially in a smaller home, are too awkward for the traditional rug. Instead, look for irregularly shaped rugs like a cowhide, faux fur sherpa, oval, or round. The key is to make sure it’s proportional to the room and your furniture.
Brighter lights can make you feel alert and awake, where as dimmer, softer lights can be relaxing and sleep-inducing. Taking a layered approach to lighting with different lighting sources across different levels can create ambiance and interest to a room. Use lighting that makes the most of a room’s size and shape –uplighting makes a room feel larger, low hung pendants will create an illusion of height and clusters of lighting make large rooms seem cosier. Also you can place three or five candlesticks (always odd numbers) of different heights in one place, when lit, they become one large decorative light feature.
The easiest way to create a designer look to your home is by adding personality using accessories/decorative items. Build a collection of staple pieces, such as standout trinkets, art pieces, and vases. The great thing about decor is that you can change them with the seasons. The rule of three is vastly used in decorating and styling, displaying a trio seems to be more appealing visually and more balanced, especially when sizes, heights and materials bring some variety. Make a statement by grouping similar objects like vases, bottles or bowls together, so that they become a stronger design element as a whole than they would be individually.
Mirrors & Wall Decor
Wall Decor – Oversized wall pieces will always make a big statement to any room and can even make wall space appear larger. Invest in one piece that you really love and place it in a key position, to set the stage for your home styling. A big statemnt wall piece means you don’t need lots of clutter in the room, as it remains the star of the space. Bigger is better when it comes to wall decor.
Mirrors – Are great for so many reasons, they reflect light, they open up spaces, and make rooms look better in general. Brighten and amplify the light in a room with mirrors on walls opposing light sources. Mirrors double the visual square footage of any room. By hanging a series of three or four mirrors opposite a window to reflect the incoming light as well as the view.
Walking into a home and being hit by beautiful scents is something to experience. There are a variety of different ways to bring frangrances into your home. Aromatherapy diffusers are one of the easiest ways to give your home a good smell and spread healing and happy vibes depending on the fragrance of the oil. Scented candles are a beautiful way to have your home smelling beautiful and giving some light to the room. Lastly incense is way to quickly infuse your home with beautiful aromas. Try to stick with the same scent in the same space for a while as this is how the scent lingers longer.
Plants are a great way to take any home to the next level, because not only do plants add freshness and colour to the room, but can be treated as a decorative piece. Play with different scale plants and different leaf designs, by putting big plants near big pieces of furniture or use them to fill empty corners, while small plants can be mixed within furniture parts or compliment bigger ones (when the rule of three is applied). Another great element about indoor plants is that it helps to blur the line between the inside and out, making rooms feel larger and fresher at the same time. You can easily enhance the mood of your room with an interesting basket or pot. Make sure to provide your plants with the right amount of light needed to survive.
