SLEEP SANCTUARY CHECKLIST
A good night’s sleep is imperative if you’re to perform at your best. Sleep allows the body and mind to recuperate and stave off certain health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure and a poor immune system. To enjoy a peaceful night’s rest, relaxation is key! Start by turning your bedroom into a haven you can retreat to, a sleep sanctuary.
First, strip away furniture or items in your bedroom that no longer serve you or bring you joy. Your bedroom should be as clutter-free as possible. Then, address the following five key areas:
WINDOW TREATMENTS: Lined drapes usually suffice to shield out light, but block-out fabric may need to be considered for those who are at the receiving end of more aggressive or uncontrolled light sources.
LIGHTING: Overhead lighting can tend to be too harsh, even when dimmed. Consider softer lighting through floor or bedside lights – with shades. Warmer bulbs also assist here.
BED IS HERO: Your bed is the hero of your sleep sanctuary, treat it as such! Invest in a good mattress and linen. While neutral or softer colour palettes (light greys, blues and white) are said to help create a calming environment, if you prefer a more lively palette – make sure your bedding is made of natural fibre where possible.
ARTWORK: Bring the outdoors in with calming land- or seascapes.
FRAGRANCE: Your sleep sanctuary is a sanctum that should soothe the senses, relax you and equip you for your most peaceful night’s rest. Lavender, jasmine and sandalwood are all good fragrance choices to drift into slumber.
