Serves: 1 large serving or 2 smaller servings


For the yellow layer:

125ml (1/2 cup) frozen mango

125ml (1/2 cup) frozen banana 

1 cm piece, peeled fresh ginger

1 cm piece, peeled fresh turmeric or a ¼ tsp ground turmeric

60ml (1/4 cup) fresh orange juice or 1 small naartjie or orange

15ml (1 Tbsp) honey

For the red layer:

1 cup (250ml) frozen raspberries

1 small fresh beetroot, peeled and chopped

1 grapefruit, peeled and chopped

1 Tbsp (15ml) honey

10ml (2 tsp) chia seeds, to serve

Citrus segments, to serve, optional

Fresh mint to serve, optional


Place the frozen mango, banana, ginger, turmeric, orange juice (or naartjie or orange) and honey into a blender. Blend until smooth and set aside in a separate bowl.

Quickly rinse the jug of the blender and repeat the above steps with the frozen raspberries, beetroot, grapefruit and honey. Blend until smooth.

Divide the yellow smoothie between glasses and top with the red smoothie mixture to create a two-tone smoothie.

Scatter with chia seeds before serving and add a sprig of fresh mint.
