THE PICNIC 3 WAYS

 In Inspiration, Recipes

Somehow, when dining al fresco – food just tastes better. And enjoyed picnic-style, the sensation is heightened! It’s a chance to pause and be present, to take in your surroundings and enjoy the company of those you hold dear. Whether it’s a picnic whilst travelling, at an outdoor music festival or in your own garden – we’ve got you covered!

On the road

With a beautifully scenic continent, there’s a lot of road tripping over summer. Avoid heavily crowded pit stops and pack your own refreshments. Day one may see more elaborate offerings, where the days to come feature leftovers from the previous evening’s braai. Ensure you’ve a small cooler box for meat and a larger one for drinks. Non-perishable staples like Melba toast work wonders for layering on leftovers, and where possible, fresh produce picked up from local farm stores. For picnic toastie inspiration, try Good Looking and Cooking‘s Claire Winstanley’s recipe here.

At a show

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to good entertainment, hosted at equally impressive outdoor venues! Venue permitting, consider taking your own picnic basket and please all your senses. A classic style picnic works well here, with a mix of hardy and fresh items. Think cheese and charcuterie, crunchy crudités and homemade hummus. Pair with your favourite wines and enjoy summer at its best. (Tip: avoid the risk of breaking precious glassware and rather swop out for acrylic – browse @home’s stylish selection here.)

At home

Take advantage of a great summer’s evening and move your dinner outside. Lay down a picnic blanket (and loads of scatter cushions) to enjoy a casual dinner under the stars. With no need to transport your spread, food spoilage is not a concern. Make fresh plant-based dishes, enjoyed with the brush of a summer breeze against your cheek! We recommend Whole, Bowl Food for Balance author, Melissa’s Delport’s Flourish Bowl recipe. Pair with large icy jugs of homemade ice tea or if you’re feeling more adventurous, try our frozen mojiti recipe here.
