Image1We all tend to hibernate in winter, cuddled up in gowns and slippers, watching series or reading an old favourite with tea in bed… the perfect way to spend a Sunday. Or is it? Why not spend the day sharing food and stories with old friends, or have the family over for a Sunday roast? Here are a few tips to make entertaining easy this season, with a couple of recipe ideas thrown in to get you started…

Set the scene

Think chunky knit throws, soft lighting and candles scattered around the room. You want your guests to feel relaxed and comfortable from the minute they walk through your front door. Image4Copper tones add instant warmth, whether it’s jar candles or a marsala carpet for your living room, and we love stylish accessories like this mango wood lamp with a natural linen shade. Put on a laid back playlist, light the fire, and voila, you’re almost ready to welcome guests to your home.

Start cooking early

Hearty soups and slow cooked stews are the ultimate comfort food, and can be full of goodness too. Do all the prep work in the morning, and let it simmer to soften and absorb all the flavours. You need a durable, heavy based saucepan for this type of cooking – so opt for a S&P George Calombaris saucepan (and read more about his new Greek cookware range here) or a Image3classic Baccarat Iconix Casserole pot. Try our carrot and coriander soup, with a dash of orange and sprinkle of cumin. If you’re planning to go all out, a roast chicken with stuffing, roast potatoes, gravy and steamed veggies is always a favourite.

Open a fine red wine

Make sure your wine rack is well stocked, and open one of your favourites an hour or two before your guests arrive, to allow it to breathe in a glass decanter. Also add port or sherry to your drinks trolley to enjoy at the end of the afternoon or evening.

Finish off with a decadent dessertImage2

Sweet treats just taste better in winter. Opt for a traditional malva pudding and custard (try either of these recipes on The Pretty Blog), or mix things up and attempt something new! This Spanish Churros with chocolate espresso sauce recipe is decadent and completely delicious!
